The parlour's Mango Lassi gelato was judged against 30 other gelaterias, which are based in Italy and the Canary Islands, before winning one of the top prizes. Gelato Village co-founder Daniele Taverna said that initially the team was invited to go by a friend who was showcasing at the festival.
Daniele said: "Our friend encouraged us to come out and see the festival just for the experience. "However, once the judges heard that we were coming from Leicester, they invited us to showcase our gelato. "Leicester is very famous in Italy now and we thought that our Mango Lassi gelato was the best flavour to represent the city." Each year, nearly 60,000 people descend on the small town to sample the products on offer by artisan gelato makers.
The judging panel consisted of journalists, bloggers and gelato experts and is judged 50 per cent on taste and 50 per cent on presentation. Daniele said: "It was unexpected to get an award but we are very pleased. "I think the judges were looking for a flavour that was delicious and simple, which is what our Mango Lassi Gelato is. "It is truly a huge honour to represent Leicester and to have the best try and judge our gelato. None of this would have been possible though, without the support of the people of Leicester. "I hope this award reaffirms that we are truly Italian and make authentic gelato. This has been honoured by some of the best gelato makers in Italy. "It would be great also to be able to twin with the town in the future."
Co-founder Antonio De Vecchi said: "I'm truly thrilled about the experience. Not only being judged and rewarded, but also working with some of the best gelatieri in Italy, has made me grow professionally."
